Why won't gamespy arcade work for me?

I registered fine and can browse around with the program. When I try to join a room the screen looks like it would on your internet browser if you weren't connected. Is this because I am not plugged directly to the modem (I'm through a router). Should I use something I know nothing about. Perhapps port forwarding?

because gamespy is shockingly bad...get steam!
