What is HTTP/1.1 500 Server Error?

I usually check into http://archive.gamespy.com/comics/dorktower/ (Dork Tower) a couple of times a week but this last week when I try to go to the site I get the error message:

HTTP/1.1 500 Server Error

What does this mean and how can I sort out the problem (assuming it's local) to allow me to access the site again?

I seem to be able to access this site so assuming you still have problems it must be local. It seems quite likely it was a server problem though.
