Why can't i play battlefield 1942 online?

i just bought battlefield 1942 and installed it and it works fine, at least in single player mode. when i go to to play it online i select which server i want to join and it goes to connect. then a box comes up stating unable to connect to server. i've done everything in the FAQ guide that was installed with the game. can anyone help me? do i need to subscribe to gamespy in order to play this? this sux i want to play this game. i have no problem playing call of duty online, cannot figure out why i can't play battlefield 1942 online.
